Electron transport system and oxidative phosphorylation

Study notes
Cyanide and carbon monoxide kill by jamming complex IV (cytochrome oxidase) — electrons cannot reach oxygen, the proton gradient collapses, and ATP production stops in minutes. Conversely, brown fat cells deliberately 'short-circuit' the gradient with uncoupling proteins to release heat instead of ATP — how newborn babies stay warm.
