Study notes

Why is copper extracted by self-reduction but iron needs coke? Step 1: Cu₂S roasted partially: 2Cu₂S + 3O₂ → 2Cu₂O + 2SO₂. Step 2: Cu₂O + Cu₂S → 6Cu + SO₂ — the sulphide reduces its own oxide! Step 3: Iron has no such pair; Fe₂O₃ needs external reducer (C/CO). Step 4: Self-reduction works when metal–sulphur and metal–oxygen affinities balance — Cu's sweet spot!
