Study notes
Identify the functional group in CH₃COOH and predict one property. Step 1: The group –COOH is present → carboxylic acid. Step 2: Carboxylic acids are acidic (release H⁺). Step 3: Prediction: it will turn blue litmus red and react with NaHCO₃ releasing CO₂. Step 4: Indeed vinegar (acetic/ethanoic acid) does exactly this. The functional group, not the carbon chain, decides the chemistry.
