Study notes
A sunbeam reveals dust in a dark room. Is this the Tyndall effect, and why? Step 1: Dust particles (~microns) scatter light — visible beam, yes. Step 2: True solutions (salt water) show nothing — particles too small. Step 3: Colloids (1–1000 nm) scatter blue-ish light — the Tyndall cone. Step 4: Headlight beams in fog, blue sky haze — same physics, bigger stage. Tyndall distinguishes colloids from true solutions instantly.
