Study notes

Why must NMR solvents be deuterated (CDCl₃ not CHCl₃)? Step 1: ¹H NMR detects protons — CHCl₃'s H would give a huge signal. Step 2: CDCl₃'s D (²H) resonates at different frequency — invisible in ¹H NMR. Step 3: Tiny residual CHCl₃ gives small reference peak (7.26 ppm). Step 4: Deuteration silences the solvent — sample signals shine!
