Antibiotic prophylaxis: infective endocarditis, prosthetic joints
General Medicine and General Surgery (for BDS) · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A prosthetic-valve patient needs scaling. Why give amoxicillin beforehand? High-risk cardiac conditions need infective endocarditis prophylaxis before bacteremia-causing procedures - the single 2g dose prevents valve seeding. Students learn the selectivity: prophylaxis for high-risk hearts, not every murmur; guidelines define who - because indiscriminate antibiotics breed resistance while missing the truly at-risk kills.
