Model analysis: Bolton, Ashley Howe, Pont's
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Teeth are straight but the bite won't settle perfectly. Bolton analysis shows mandibular anterior excess. What does this mean? The lower front teeth are collectively too wide for the upper front teeth — even perfectly aligned, the overjet/overbite can't be ideal because the tooth sizes don't match. Teaching: Bolton discrepancy is solved by slenderizing (reducing widths), building up small teeth, or accepting compromise. Students learn to run Bolton before promising a perfect finish.
