Autonomic drugs: adrenergic agonists and antagonists
Pharmacology · MBBS
Study notes
Anaphylaxis from a bee sting — blood pressure crashing, airway swelling. Intramuscular adrenaline (0.5 mg) is the drug — alpha constriction raises blood pressure and reduces edema, beta-2 dilates bronchi, beta-1 supports the heart: one drug reversing all three lethal arms. Antihistamines and steroids are too slow for the airway — adrenaline first, always. Every anaphylaxis kit (EpiPen) is this pharmacology in a pocket — delay kills, adrenaline saves.
