Study notes
A 45-year-old holds the newspaper farther to read it. This is presbyopia — the lens stiffens with age, and the ciliary muscle can't round it enough for near focus (accommodation fails). Distant vision stays fine; only near work blurs. Reading glasses (convex lenses) add the missing converging power. It is universal after ~40 — not a disease but the lens's birthday — and distinct from myopia (long eyeball) or hyperopia (short eyeball).
