Strabismus and amblyopia, nystagmus
Ophthalmology · MBBS
Study notes
A 4-year-old's eye turns inward — accommodative esotropia; glasses straighten both eyes. Hypermetropic children over-accommodate to see clearly → convergence → esotropia (inward): full hypermetropic glasses relax accommodation — eyes straighten. Untreated, the deviating eye becomes amblyopic (lazy — vision lost from disuse; patching the good eye forces use — effective before 7–8 years, the critical period). Strabismus surgery (muscle recession/resection) for residual angle. The inward turn is focusing effort — glasses remove the effort.
