Bandwidth of signals and transmission medium

Study notes
Step 1: Identify the Signal Bandwidth. Suppose a music signal has a frequency range from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The bandwidth is 20,000 - 20 = 19,980 Hz. Step 2: Identify the Medium Bandwidth. Suppose the telephone line can only transmit frequencies between 300 Hz and 3,400 Hz. The medium bandwidth is 3,400 - 300 = 3,100 Hz. Step 3: Compare. The signal requires ~20,000 Hz, but the medium only offers ~3,100 Hz. Step 4: Conclusion. Since the medium's bandwidth is much smaller than the signal's bandwidth, the high-frequency details of the music will be lost. The result will be a muffled, low-quality sound. To transmit the full music, a medium with at least 20,000 Hz bandwidth (like a fiber optic cable) is needed.
