Study notes

A cricket ball of mass 0.15 kg hits a bat at 20 m/s and rebounds at 15 m/s in the opposite direction. Contact time is 0.01 s. Find the impulse and average force. Step 1: Take initial direction as positive. u = +20 m/s, v = -15 m/s Step 2: Change in momentum Δp = m(v - u) = 0.15 × (-15 - 20) = 0.15 × (-35) = -5.25 kg·m/s Step 3: Impulse J = Δp = -5.25 N·s (negative means opposite to initial motion) Step 4: Average force F = Δp/Δt = -5.25 / 0.01 = -525 N Answer: Impulse is 5.25 N·s, average force is 525 N on the ball.
