Linear momentum of a system of particles

System of particles · Physics

Study notes

Consider a system with two particles. Particle A has a mass of 2 kg and moves at 3 m/s to the right. Particle B has a mass of 4 kg and moves at 2 m/s to the left. Step 1: Define the positive direction. Let right be positive (+) and left be negative (-). Step 2: Calculate the momentum of Particle A. Momentum A (pA) = mass * velocity = 2 kg * 3 m/s = +6 kg·m/s. Step 3: Calculate the momentum of Particle B. Momentum B (pB) = mass * velocity = 4 kg * (-2 m/s) = -8 kg·m/s. Step 4: Calculate the total linear momentum of the system. Total Momentum (P) = pA + pB P = 6 kg·m/s + (-8 kg·m/s) P = -2 kg·m/s. The total momentum of the system is 2 kg·m/s directed to the left.
