Problem: A doctor wants to check if a patient has a broken wrist bone. Why would they choose an X-ray over an MRI? Step 1: Identify the target. The target is a bone, which is hard and dense. Step 2: Compare mechanisms. X-rays work best on dense materials because they are blocked by them, creating high contrast. MRI works best on soft tissues and water content. Step 3: Consider speed and cost. X-rays are quick and cheaper than MRI. Step 4: Conclusion. Since bones block X-rays easily, the broken bone will appear clearly white against the darker soft tissue. MRI is unnecessary for simple bone fractures and takes much longer. Therefore, the doctor chooses the X-ray.
