Study notes

A spirometer test before a marathon: the athlete's vital capacity reads 5.5 litres versus 4.5 for an untrained person — bigger lungs, more oxygen per breath. Smokers show reduced vital capacity as alveoli are destroyed (emphysema), which is why they get breathless climbing stairs.
