Study notes

Distinguish butan-1-ol, butan-2-ol, 2-methyl-2-propanol by Lucas test. Step 1: Add Lucas reagent (conc. HCl + ZnCl₂) to each. Step 2: 2-methyl-2-propanol (3°): instant turbidity (stable carbocation, SN1 fast). Step 3: Butan-2-ol (2°): turbidity in ~5 minutes. Step 4: Butan-1-ol (1°): no turbidity at room temp (heat needed). Lucas classifies!
