Amalgam: composition, mercury hygiene, handling
Dental Materials · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Why is amalgam triturated in a sealed capsule, not mixed by hand? Hand-mixing exposes mercury vapour and risks an incorrect mercury ratio. A sealed capsule in a mechanical triturator mixes a pre-measured alloy–mercury dose quickly and uniformly, keeps mercury vapour contained, and any waste goes into designated amalgam separators — the core of mercury hygiene.
