Study notes
A tooth is pushed 3 mm upward into the socket (intrusion) after a fall. Why is this more serious than a simple chip? Intrusion crushes the periodontal ligament and may drive the root into developing structures; the pulp often dies and the tooth risks ankylosis (fusion to bone). A simple enamel chip affects only the surface. Teaching ranks intrusion among the gravest luxations because the damage is to the attachment apparatus itself, needing specialist follow-up.
