Gingival enlargement and gingival recession
Periodontology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Gums overgrow in a patient on anti-seizure medication, while another patient has exposed roots from hard brushing. What unites these cases? Both are gingival position disorders with identifiable causes - drug-stimulated fibroblast growth in one, mechanical trauma in the other. Students learn the paired lesson: enlargement adds tissue (remove the cause, reshape surgically if needed), recession loses it (grafting can cover roots) - and both are preventable when the cause is caught early.
