Potentially malignant disorders: leukoplakia, OSMF, lichen planus
Oral Medicine and Radiology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A gutka chewer shows blanched fibrotic bands and 20mm opening. Why is habit cessation the first prescription? OSMF (oral submucous fibrosis) is areca-nut driven - continued exposure worsens fibrosis and feeds malignant transformation; no drug outruns the habit. Students learn PMD management's order: stop the cause (tobacco/areca), biopsy to grade dysplasia, then surveillance or treatment - because the lesion is the habit made visible.
