Ulcerative lesions: aphthous, traumatic, infective ulcers
Oral Medicine and Radiology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A painful round ulcer with a red halo appears monthly and heals in 10 days. What pattern is this? Recurrent aphthous stomatitis - the common canker sore: round/oval, yellowish base, red halo, painful but self-healing in 7-14 days. Students learn the reassuring pattern versus the red flag: any ulcer not healing in 2 weeks, or hard/indurated, needs professional evaluation - because early cancer can mimic a simple ulcer.
