Q: A college with 400 freshmen, 300 sophomores, 200 juniors, 100 seniors wants 100 surveyed proportionally. How many from each? Stratified sampling: freshmen 40, sophomores 30, juniors 20, seniors 10. Each stratum sampled proportionally - fair representation! Simple random might accidentally miss seniors entirely.
