Study notes
An intramuscular injection given in the wrong part of the buttock causes foot drop. The sciatic nerve (L4–S3), the body's largest nerve, exits below the piriformis muscle in the gluteal region. Injections must go in the upper-outer quadrant of the buttock to avoid it. If injured, the leg's flexors and all muscles below the knee lose supply — the foot can't lift (foot drop) and the outer leg goes numb.
