Thermal equilibrium and zeroth law
Laws of thermodynamics · Physics
Study notes
Step 1: Place a hot cup of coffee (80°C) and a cold ice cube (0°C) in a sealed box. Step 2: The heat flows from the coffee to the ice cube. Step 3: Eventually, both the coffee and the ice cube reach a final temperature of 40°C. Step 4: Since they are now at the same temperature, they are in thermal equilibrium. Step 5: If we place a thermometer in the box and it also reads 40°C, the Zeroth Law confirms that the coffee and ice cube are in equilibrium with each other because they are both in equilibrium with the thermometer.
