Imaging physics: X-ray production, IOPA technique and interpretation
Oral Medicine and Radiology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
An IOPA shows elongated teeth. What angulation error caused it? Insufficient vertical angulation in the bisecting technique - the beam wasn't perpendicular to the imaginary bisector, stretching the image. Students learn the geometry: paralleling (long-cone, sensor parallel to tooth) gives anatomical accuracy; bisecting trades accuracy for practicality - and every distortion has a geometric cause the operator created.
