Implant surgery: placement protocols, bone grafting basics
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A tooth is extracted and the socket walls are thin. Why graft the socket now instead of waiting? Socket preservation grafting maintains ridge width/height as it heals - without it, the ridge collapses 30-50% in months, making future implant placement need bigger surgery. Students learn implant surgery as site development: today's graft is tomorrow's straightforward placement.
