Biomolecules: lipids — structure, classification, lipoproteins
Biochemistry · MBBS
Study notes
A 50-year-old's lipid profile shows LDL 190, HDL 35. LDL 190 mg/dL is high — LDL deposits cholesterol into artery walls (atherosclerosis → heart attack/stroke), while HDL 35 is low — less reverse transport back to the liver. The pattern (high LDL, low HDL) is the classic atherogenic profile: diet, exercise, and often statins (which block cholesterol synthesis and upregulate LDL receptors). The numbers are the message — lipoproteins decide where cholesterol goes.
