Fracture basics: classification, healing, principles of management

Orthopedics · MBBS

Study notes

A fall — wrist deformed; X-ray shows fracture; reduced, casted, pulses checked. Fracture basics (definition — break in cortex: describe — bone, location, type — transverse/oblique/spiral/comminuted, displacement, open/closed, neurovascular): healing (hematoma → inflammation → soft callus → hard callus → remodeling — 6–8 weeks — children faster): management (reduce — closed/open; hold — cast — joint above/below; slab, traction, internal — plates/screws/nails, external fixator; rehabilitate — physiotherapy): principles (anatomical reduction, stable fixation, preserve blood supply, early mobilization). Check neurovascular before and after — pulses, sensation, movement. The cast holds — the body heals.
