Neonatology: normal newborn care, APGAR, neonatal resuscitation
Pediatrics · MBBS
Study notes
A newborn not crying — dry, warm, stimulate; still apneic — bag-mask ventilation; cries. Neonatal resuscitation (dry, warm, position airway, clear secretions, stimulate: if apneic/gasping or HR <100 — positive pressure ventilation — bag-mask; HR <60 — chest compressions 3:1; drugs — adrenaline if still <60): most babies need only drying/stimulation. Normal newborn care (APGAR — Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration — 1 and 5 min — 7–10 normal; delayed cord clamping 1–3 min; thermal — skin-to-skin, warm chain; eye — erythromycin; vitamin K — IM; breastfeeding within 1 hour — exclusive 6 months). The first minute is golden — dry and stimulate before anything else.
